Why People Struggle with Steps and Rollators
Here’s the thing: a lot of people try to lift the whole rollator up onto the step. That move usually ends in:
- A pulled back.
- A wobbly balance moment (aka the “oh no!” shuffle).
- Or, worst case, a fall.
And we don’t do falls here. No falls. Zero. Zilch.
So instead, let me show you two PT-approved, safe ways to get up a step without making your rollator (or your back) hate you.
Method 1: The Front Bar Tip & Glide
- Approach the step.
- Place one leg back (this helps with balance).
- Reach for the front bar of your rollator.
- Tip it back just enough so the front two wheels pop up onto the step.
- Walk it forward then lift so all four wheels are on the step.
- Step up with your stronger leg, and boom—you’re safely up.
Think of it as “pop, glide, step”—easy and safe.
Method 2: The Mini Wheelie (Yes, You Heard Me Right)
Not into the front bar tip? No problem. Here’s the wheelie method:
- Squeeze the brakes.
- Tip the rollator back slightly (mini wheelie, not Evel Knievel).
- Unlock the brakes just a bit, roll the front wheels onto the step.
- Walk it forward then lift so all four wheels are on the step.
- Grab the brakes again, then step up with your strongest leg.
And you’re up without breaking a sweat—or your hip.
Coming Down the Step Safely (The Tricky Part)
Going down is where things can get dicey if you’re not careful. Here’s the safe way:
- Roll up to the edge of the step.
- Lower the front two wheels onto the ground first.
- Squeeze the brakes so it doesn’t take off like it’s late for bingo.
- Slowly roll the back wheels down
- Squeeze the brakes as you step down carefully.
Step conquered. No drama. No falls.
