How to Walk with Crutches (With or Without Weight on Your Foot)

Crutches: Friend or Foe?

If you’ve ever tried using crutches, you know they can feel more like torture devices than mobility aids. But if you use them correctly, they’ll help you move safely until you’re healed.

I’m Dr. Shawn, Your PT Guy, and here’s how to walk with crutches—whether you can put weight on your foot or not.

Step 1: Set Your Crutches Correctly

  • Pads should be about 2 finger widths below your armpit.
  • Handles should line up with your wrist crease.
  • Slight bend in your elbow = perfect.
    Reminder: your armpits are not armpit rests. Don’t lean there or you risk nerve damage.

If You Can Put Some Weight on the Foot (Weight Bearing)

  • Crutches forward.
  • Hurt foot steps between the crutches.
  • Push through your hands, then bring the good foot forward.
    Pattern: Crutches Hurt Foot Arms Good Foot.

If You Can’t Put Any Weight on the Foot (Non-Weight Bearing)

Options:

  1. Straight-Leg Hop: Keep the injured leg lifted straight. Works, but it’s tiring on your hip.
  2. Flamingo Stance (My Favorite): Bend the injured knee slightly behind you, like a flamingo. Less hip strain, easier balance.

Pattern: Crutches → Arms → Good Leg (hop).

Sitting Down with Crutches

  • Back up until your good leg touches the chair.
  • Hold both crutches on your injured side.
  • Reach back with your other hand for the armrest.
  • Sit down slowly.
  • Reverse the process to stand up.

A: Talk to your PT. Sometimes a walker or knee scooter is safer.
